In this world full of misery, there is only one sure refuge, and that is God Himself. “He is a shield to all who take refuge in him” (Psalm 18:31).
“Take refuge” comes from a Hebrew word meaning “to seek refuge within” or “to hide within” or “to hide together”. This word denotes a secret hiding place. Texans like to call it a hidey hole which means "hiding hole".
When we feel very tired by all our efforts, when we are confused because of our various problems, when we are hurt by our friends, when we are surrounded by our enemies, we can take refuge in Allah. There is no security in this world. If we find security in this world, we will never experience the joy of God's love and protection. We will lose the happiness that has been provided for us.
The safest place is Allah alone. When storm clouds gather and disaster begins to set in, we must come to God's presence in prayer and remain there (Psalm 57:2).
George MacDonald said, “A man of perfect faith is one who can come to God in all the shortcomings of his feelings and desires, without passion or ambition; with burdens of disappointment, failure, feelings of neglect, and neglect, and saying to Him, 'You are my refuge.' ”
