DRY TEARS

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted (Matthew 5:4)

I read a story about a woman who had not cried for 18 years due to physical, not emotional reasons. The doctors said that he was suffering from a rare disease, namely Sjogren's syndrome. For unknown reasons, the antibodies in her body attacked her tear glands, as if they were unwanted foreign bodies.

That reminds me of the spiritual problems facing God's people. They should be able to cry, but they can't. They should learn from what Jesus meant when He said, "Blessed are those who mourn" (Matthew 5:4).

Sometimes we think that tears are a sign of weakness. However, if so, why did Jesus weep? (Luke 19:41). Why did James ask Christians to weep for their sins? (James 4:9).

Yes, everyone has a different way of expressing emotions. But tears, in the truest sense, are not the real issue. The most important thing is the attitude of the heart. How deeply do we feel the effects of our sin. Do we really feel sad spiritually? Do we suffer to see the tragic consequences that our sins have in our relationships with others? I don't mean to show feigned sadness, but do we also feel the same sadness that God feels about evil? Are we willing to change it? Or are our tears dry too? --Mart De Haan II
