PUSHING GOD

: "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away, except when I drink it, it shall be Thy will!" (Matthew 26:42)

Under General George Patton during World War II, the Third Army succeeded in repelling the Nazis until the fog and rain forced the troops to stop. Then Patton called an army chaplain and asked, "Do you have a good prayer for the weather?" The priest immediately complied with the general's request. He wrote a prayer, and then Patton ordered that it be printed and distributed among the 250,000 soldiers under his leadership. He told them to pray that the weather would clear up.

The Scriptures teach that God wants us to bring all our requests to Him, and have confidence that He cares and will answer us (Philippians 4:6; 1 John 5:14,15). But He never had an obligation to answer in the way we want or just because many people prayed.

When the Son of God suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane, He made His humble submission to His Father, saying, “Thy will be done” (Matthew 26:42). That is the principle of Gethsemane that should dominate our prayers.

The Father's will always contains infinite love and wisdom. Therefore, instead of trying to pressure God into thinking He is obligated to answer our prayers, we, as believing children, should gladly surrender all our desires to Him. Whatever He bestows will prove to be the best blessing in the end --Vernon Grounds
