Give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:11)
A woman who prepares food during the harvest season for hungry farm workers will watch them finish each meal served at the dinner table. Then he would say, “Good. I prepared a sufficient amount.”
Many of us struggle to feel the same way about the resources entrusted to us. When we finish eating or at the end of the month, do we really believe that Allah has provided for our needs? When we pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), how much do we expect God to provide? As much as we want? Or as much as we need?
Health experts say that the key to good nutrition is to eat until we feel full, not until we are full. In every area of life, there is a difference between true hunger and greed. Often, we want a little more.
In Jesus' teaching on prayer, He said, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Therefore do not be anxious and say, 'What shall we eat?' What are we going to drink? What will we wear? ” (Matthew 6: 8,31).
When God provides for our needs, perhaps we should look at His providence through a new perspective and resolve to give thanks by saying, “Father, You have given me enough.” -DCM
