FACE TO FACE

I saw the Lord sitting on a throne high and lifted up (Isaiah 6: 1)

Face-to-face with someone famous can blow you away. As a sports columnist, I have interviewed basketball stars David Robinson and Avery Johnson. I once stood in a garage with Joe Gibbs, a race car owner and professional football coach.

One can feel inferior when talking to someone famous. We too can feel admiration and respect for athletes and other stars, so that we feel unimportant.

However, it is nothing compared to what Isaiah saw "in the year that king Uzziah died" (Isaiah 6: 1). Isaiah experienced something very extraordinary and frightening beyond compare; he stands face to face with God!

In a vision, God told Isaiah who He really was. What the prophet saw had a huge impact on him. He saw the majesty of God. It gained a new understanding of the holiness of God. He saw the contradiction between his sinful self and the perfection of God. He heard God's call to serve, and he responded.

Today, we can see God in His word and in the work of the Spirit who is in and through us. We too can fellowship with Him through prayer. However, one day, we will see the Lord face to face in heaven (1 John 3:2). Then we will be totally blown away! --JDB
