Your eyes are too pure to see evil (Habakkuk 1:13)
I'm a news junkie who likes to know what's going on in the world. However, sometimes the cruelty of life makes me feel like a child watching a horror movie. I don't want to see what happens. I wanted to turn away so as not to see all that.
God reacts to evil in the same way. Years ago, He warned the Israelites that He would turn away from them if they turned to evil (Deuteronomy 31:18). The Israelites did evil, and He hid His face (Ezekiel 39:24).
Habakkuk did not forsake God, but he suffered with those who had forsaken Him. "Why do you show me iniquity," he asked God, "so that I look at injustice?" (Habakkuk 1: 3).
God's response to His bewildered prophet shows that when evil obscures the face of God, our inability to see Him does not mean that He is not working for our good. God said, "Look among the nations and see, be astonished and wonder, for I have done a work in your days which you would not believe, if it were told" (verse 5). God will judge Judah, but He will also judge Babylon as a conquering nation for their wickedness (see Habakkuk 2). Through it all, "the just shall live by faith" (2: 4).
When world events discourage you, leave the news and read the Bible. The end of the story has already been written by our holy God. Evil will not last --JAL
