"GOOD FRIEND"

You are my friends, if you do what I command you (John 15:14)

The congregation listened intently as the pastor began his prayer with the sentence: "Our Father who art in heaven..." Suddenly, the pastor's sentence seemed to be answered by a voice saying, "Hello, good friends!"

People started laughing when they realized that the voice was actually coming from a communication device that picked up the words of a truck driver who was talking on his radio! Not much was accomplished at the service that day, as the congregation kept on laughing at the sound that made them think God answered the pastor by calling him "good fellow."

Moses understood what it was like to be God's friend -- that is, to have a relationship that went beyond ordinary friendships. God often spoke to Moses "face to face, as a man speaks to his friend" (Exodus 33:11). Abraham, the father of the nations, is also called a friend of God (2 Chronicles 20:7).

However, can you and I be friends of God? In today's Bible reading, Jesus, the supreme example of loving friendship, calls His disciples friends (John 15:13,15). He said solemnly: "You are my friends, if you do what I command you" (verse 14).

And what is His command for us? That is, that we love Him with all our hearts and love others as we love ourselves (Mark 12:30,31). That's how we become friends of God --AMC
