Though I walk in the valley of deep shadow, I fear no danger, for you are with me (Psalm 23: 4)
In his famous book The Denial of Death, author and anthropologist Ernest Becker argues that all of our worries and fears are rooted in our fear of death. Even though Becker was not a follower of Christ, his scientific studies can serve as an additional note to Hebrews 2, which says that our nature is influenced by the fear of death throughout life (v. 15).
We all know that feeling of fear. And, of course, the people we meet in the Bible experience fear, ranging from dreadful anxiety to terrifying panic. However, we need not be afraid, even when we face death. Our Lord has experienced death and conquered it!
The writer of Hebrews states that Jesus was "made a little lower than the angels, ... that by the grace of God he might die for all men" (2: 9). Through His death, Christ has defeated "him, the devil, who has the power over death," freeing us from "his fear of death" (verses 14:15).
Are you a victim of your own fears? Remember the beautiful promise of Scripture that can banish fear: "Fear not, for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." " (Isaiah 41:10 ) --VCG
