OUR RESPONSE

To justify himself the man said to Jesus, "And who is my fellow man?" (Lukas 10:29)

In the film The Four Feathers, Harry Faversham leaves England in the 1880s to find his friends in the royal armed forces in Sudan. On his way, Harry gets lost and nearly dies in the vast wilderness of Africa. When his life was almost lost, he was saved by an African named Abou Fatma who then took care of him.

Amazed by the man's kindness to strangers, Harry asked why his new friend would do all that for him. Fatma replied immediately, "God brought you to me!"

In the parable of the good Samaritan, a priest and a Levite, who actually had a calling to help those in need, simply left the traveler who was lying near death on the road to Jericho. Even though the Samaritan was a hated person, he actually gave time and part of his wealth to help the injured person. It reflects the mercy of Christ. The Samaritan bandaged his wounds, took him to an inn, “and nursed him” (Luke 10:34). The person who was robbed was in the lifeline of the three who passed through it, but only the Samaritans responded.

As we go through life, we are challenged to be responsive to the needs of others. We can show them the love of Christ or ignore it. How will we respond to God-given choices in our lives? -WEC
