But to You, O God, my Lord, eyes are fixed; In you I take refuge, do not throw me! (Psalm 141: 8)
I started wearing glasses when I was 10 years old. I still need it to this day because my eyes, which are over 50 years old, are getting weaker. When I was younger, I thought glasses were annoying, especially when I was exercising. Once, the lenses of my glasses cracked while I was playing softball. And, I had to wait a few weeks to get a replacement. During that waiting period, everything I saw looked lopsided and indistinct.
In this life, grief is almost the same as a cracked spectacle lens. Grief creates conflict within us, about what we are experiencing and what we believe. Grief can obscure perspectives on life - and on God. At such a time, we need God to give us a new lens that can help us see back clearly. That clear vision usually begins when we turn our gaze to God. The psalmist urges us to do this: "To Thee, O God, my Lord, my eyes are fixed; in Thee do I take refuge, do not cast me down" (141: 8). Seeing God clearly can help us see life events more clearly.
As we look to God in the midst of sorrow and struggle, we will find comfort and hope in our daily lives. He will help us to be able to see everything back clearly --WEC
