What is the meaning of your life? Your life is like a vapor which appears for a little while and then vanishes (James 4:14)
That same day, novelist Bret Lott received two pieces of news that changed his life. The first news reported that unexpectedly a student who was gifted in writing died due to swelling of the blood vessels of the brain. The second piece of news came a few hours later from a well-known television talk show host. The man claimed to have selected one of Lott's novels for the book club event which was broadcast live every month. This meant that instantly he became rich and famous. The first news was so sad, while the second news was very encouraging. But he tries to balance the two.
Lott, who was a follower of Christ, wrote the name of his deceased disciple on a white card and carried it with him the following month when he appeared on television. "I have promised myself," he said. “to always keep this card in my pocket. By looking at it I'm reminded 'don't let this fame make you arrogant, because you never know when your age limit will be.'”
The book of James compares our lives to “a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes” (4:14). Let us not be lulled by our current success and our plans for tomorrow. Instead, we must remember that our lives are in God's hands and every day is a blessing from Him.
One day, God will call us to live with Him. With this in mind, may we have the right perspective and humility in dealing with every news we receive--DCM
