THE BENEFITS OF THE STROKE

Educate the young according to the path that is right for him, then even in his old age he will not deviate from that path (Proverbs 22:6)

Christian educator and author, Howard Hendricks, warns parents against bribing or threatening their children to make them obey. Children just need firm, loving discipline, coupled with a little spanking.

Once Hendricks visited a family. When asked to eat together, a child sat across from him.

"Eat the potatoes, Sally," her mother said in a commanding tone.

"Sally, if you don't eat the potatoes, you won't get dessert later!"

Sally instead winked at Hendricks. After making sure Sally didn't want to eat, the mother took the potato and gave Sally ice cream. Hendricks sees it as the fact that parents always obey their children's wishes, not the other way around as the Bible says "Children, obey your parents" (Ephesians 6:1).

Many parents are afraid to take decisive action, even if they know it is best for their children. They are afraid that their children will oppose them and think that they no longer love them. Hendricks said, "It's not how they think you are concerned now that matters, but how they will think you are 20 years from now."

Even though discipline from Heavenly Father is painful, in the future (perhaps a few years from now) it will “produce the fruit of righteousness that gives peace to those who are trained by it” (Hebrews 12:11). As loving parents, can we see far ahead like our Father in heaven? --JEY
