Starting a fight is like opening a waterway; so stand back before the argument starts (Proverbs 17:14)
A newspaper reported on a tragic violence that took place in South America. A man killed his best friend while they were arguing about their different political views. When asked why he did it, he replied with these chilling words: "We started the discussion peacefully, then we argued. Lost for words, I killed him."
This tragedy reminds us of Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5 about the close relationship between anger and murder. First of all He emphasizes that anger is so serious (vv. 21-22). He warns us that anger accompanied by hatred is like murder, which Allah will also punish. Then He gave practical advice on how someone who has a problem in his heart can calm anger (verses 23-26).
We all have to really pay attention to the anger that is in our hearts. We may think that we can control it. Unfortunately, oftentimes it is anger that controls us and causes us to do things that are impossible for us to do when we think clearly. That's why unresolved anger needs to be viewed as a ticking time bomb that can explode, self-destruct, and cause irreparable damage to others. It is true that not all anger is wrong. But all wrong anger needs to be realized and acknowledged before it leads us to a "murder" --MRDII
