Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength (Deuteronomy 6:5)
We may feel disturbed when we realize that our children often imitate what we say and do. I remember when I was concerned about the way my son scolded his younger sister which irritated him. But gently, my wife pointed out that her behavior was exactly like mine.
A few weeks later, I scolded my son when I was frustrated. At my wife's encouragement, I apologized to my son and told him that next time I would try to respect him more. A few months later, after I noticed, it turned out that his treatment of his sister was getting better.
Children learn to love and obey God not just from listening to the words we speak. They also learn by observing our behavior. We should constantly teach them about God and His word as we “sit in [our] houses, when [we] are on the way, when [we] lie down and when [we] get up” (Deuteronomy 6: 7). Along with the words we convey to our children, we also need to set an example of our love and obedience to God.
We may never be perfect parents, but our children must see our strong desire to please God. And when we experience failure, they must also see our regrets. We teach our children both by the words we say and by the actions we do --Albert Lee
