RUN TO WIN!

Run like that, until you get it! (1 Corinthians 9:24)

The following principles of life also apply to running races: Only those with strong determination can achieve their goals. Olympic medals are not awarded to fat businessmen who are constantly panting on the track during practice.

Eric Liddell, in the film Chariots of Fire, explains this principle. Shortly before the first corner in the 400 meter race, Eric was pushed to the ground, sending him crashing onto the grass. When he got up, he saw that the other participants had left him. Determined, Eric jumped. With his head held high and arms swinging rapidly, he sped forward. He was not only determined to catch up with the group in front of him, but also to win the race. And he won!

This is the spirit which the Apostle Paul permeated in his ministry. In 1 Corinthians 9:24 he says, "Don't you know that all the competitors run in the competition arena, but that only one person gets the prize? So run in such a way that you get it!" Paul saw himself as an Olympic athlete vying for a gold medal, straining every muscle in his body to reach the finish line. And what is the prize that Paul is after? Not just a mortal gift, but “an everlasting crown” (v. 25).

Victory is always possible for every Christian. So let us run in such a spiritual race to win! -HWR
