FORGET GOD

What is sown on good soil is he who hears the word and understands, and because of this he bears fruit (Matthew 13:23)

A visionary scholar named AJ Heschel told the story of his life as a student in Berlin. Although he was a pious man, he used to be so engrossed in works of art in those days, that one day he forgot to pray at sunset, as he used to do. He confessed, "The sun has set, the night has come .... And I have forgotten God."

Heschel's omission may be a small thing to us. However, his passionate zeal showed that he understood the importance of cultivating a spiritual life.

Jesus once told a story about the sower, the seed, and the four kinds of soil (Matthew 13: 1-9). The land that is among the thorns represents those who let the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth squeeze the word of God into their hearts (verses 7,22).

That is a dangerous possibility for anyone who takes God's word lightly. The world can indeed make us forget spiritual realities and responsibilities.

Have we allowed the attractions of this world to prevent us from reading and meditating on God's word? With all our prayers, let us strive to be people who “heard the word and understood, and because of this it bears fruit” (verse 23).

As the sun sets tonight, don't let us find ourselves forgetting God --VCG
