Whatever you do in word or deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus ( Colossians 3:17).
For centuries, people from various nations have held harvest feasts to express gratitude for nature's gifts and blessings in life. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln designated a national holiday in the United States as "a day to give thanks and praise the goodness of the Father".
Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen thinks that most holidays are spoiled by the spirit of commerce. However, the feast of Thanksgiving has still served its purpose to this day. He said, "Today is a wonderful day. It is a day full of thanksgiving."
I don't know what other people do, but we as followers of Christ have the privilege and responsibility to continue to give thanks every day, throughout the year that we live. Paul encouraged the Colossians to continue to grow in Christ and to abound with thanksgiving (Colossians 2:6,7). We do all things "in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God our Father" (Colossians 3:17).
Abraham Lincoln's official announcement also stated that all the blessings we receive are "a wonderful gift from the Most High God, who, although hating our sins, He is still merciful".
Today is a fitting day for us to give thanks to God. So is tomorrow and the days to come --DCM
