So if a person knows how to do good, but he does not do it, he is sinning (James 4:17)
In the cartoon Peanuts by Charles Schulz, Marcie gives flowers to her teacher. Not to be outdone, Peppermint Patty said to the teacher, “I thought about doing the same thing Ma'am, but I never took the time to do it. Can you use a vase filled with good intentions?”
We all have the intention to do something good, but then fail to follow through on that intention. We may want to call to see how a friend is doing, or visit a neighbor who is sick, or write a message of encouragement to a loved one. But we don't take the time.
Some people know that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven, and they plan to believe in Him someday. However, they always put it off. They may have good intentions, but it does not bring salvation.
As Christians, we might say that we want to grow closer to God. But somehow, we don't make time to read God's word or pray.
James gave a stern warning about the problem of not taking action: “So if a person knows how to do good, and does not do it, he is a sinner” (4:17).
Is there something we put off? Write that card or letter today. Visit the sick friend. A vase full of good intentions won't brighten someone's day —Anne Cetas
