The grass withers, ... but the word of our God endures forever (Isaiah 40: 8)
Centuries ago, that was exactly what happened when thousands of books in the Library of Alexandria caught fire. In ancient times, Alexandria was a place to conduct research. Then on a disastrous day in 47 BC, Julius Caesar burned his ships in the port of Alexandria to keep them from falling into enemy hands. The fire soon spread to the naval docks and armory, and ended up destroying the precious 400,000 scrolls in the library.
Such tragedies show how easily written materials can be damaged. This fact makes the survival of our Bible a miracle. The Word of God has been through various incidents of arson, riots, revolutions, persecutions, and disasters. However, theologians say the manuscripts have been accurately preserved after thousands of years of reproduction.
God inspired the writing of Scripture (2Timothy 3:16) and has promised to preserve it throughout the centuries (Isaiah 40: 8). The next time you open the Bible, take time to reflect on how precious the Bible is, and thank God who has kept it safe for you --HDF
