Even if the encamped armies surround me, do not fear my heart (Psalm 27: 3)
During the United States Civil War, a fierce battle broke out near Moorefield, West Virginia. Because it was located close to enemy lines, the city was controlled alternately by Union troops and Confederate troops.
In the center of the city, lived an old woman. According to the testimony of a Presbyterian pastor, one morning some enemy soldiers banged on the woman's door and demanded that they be served breakfast. He then invited them in and said that he would prepare something for them.
When the food was ready, he said, I used to read the Bible and pray before breakfast. I hope you don't mind following my habits. They also agreed. Then he picked up his Bible, opened it randomly, and began reading Psalm 27. God is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? God is the fortress of my life, against whom should I tremble? (verse 1). He read it on to the last verse: Wait for the Lord! Strengthen and fortify your heart! (verse 14). After finishing reading, he said, Let us pray. While he was praying, he heard the voices of the soldiers pacing in the room of his house. By the time he said amen and raised his head, it turned out that the soldiers had left.
