It is good for me that I am afflicted, so that I may learn Your statutes (Psalm 119: 71)
I was in my early thirties. I became a devoted wife and mother and a Christian worker with my husband. However, I found myself on a journey that no one was willing to take on a downhill journey. I am headed for a breakdown that most of us avoid, namely the breakdown of constant self-reliance.
But finally I experienced some strange relief after falling on to the rock at the bottom of the abyss. There I found something unexpected. The rock I fell on was none other than Christ Himself. By surrendering solely to Him, I am in a position to rebuild the rest of my life, this time as someone dependent on God, not as someone dependent on myself. The experience at the bottom of the abyss became a turning point and one of the most important spiritual developments in my life.
Many people feel completely spiritual when they fall to the bottom of the abyss. Their suffering is often strengthened by Christians who have a very narrow view of what the sufferer is going through, and why it is happening. However, our heavenly Father was delighted by the results He wanted to achieve from that painful process.
One who knows the secret of life that depends on God can say, "It is good for me to be oppressed, that I may learn your statutes" (Psalm 119: 71) JEY
