Someone attended a meeting where the guest speaker spoke at great length. When his listeners couldn't take it anymore, he got up and slowly made his way out through a side door. In the corridor he met a friend who asked him the question, "Has that person finished talking?" "Yes," the person replied, "that person was finished a long time ago, but he didn't realize it! He just wouldn't stop!"
What is necessary and what is worth sharing is something we should be doing with others every day. However, if we are to be honest with ourselves, most of what we talk about is nothing more than idle talk. The Lord Jesus warned, "Every idle word that a person speaks must be accounted for on the day of judgment" (Matthew 12:36).
Stop for a moment and think about it, what do we usually talk about in our daily conversations with other people? What are most of our talking points about? Have we been talking too much and not giving others a chance to speak? What are we talking about that benefits other people? And more than that, do our words glorify God?
God can enable us to speak to build others up, not just simply speaking. Today too, make the following words of David our prayer: "Watch my mouth, O LORD, watch at the door of my lips!" (Psalm 142:3) -- RWD
