After that the king stood near the pillar and made a covenant before God.... And all the people also supported the covenant (2 Kings 23:3)
In May 2001, British evangelist J. John spoke in Liverpool, England, about God's eighth commandment: "You shall not steal" (Exodus 20:15; Deuteronomy 5:19). The results of his sermon were dramatic.
Many people's hearts have been changed. One writer reported that a number of stolen items were returned. The stolen items that were returned included hotel towels, crutches belonging to the hospital, library books, money and many more. In fact, one man, now in service, returned towels he had taken from the Wimbledon tennis championships years ago when he was working there.
Almost the same event also happened during the reign of King Josiah which lasted for 18 years. Because it was ruled by evil kings for too long, the record of God's law was lost. So, when Hilkiah found God's law and Shaphan read it to King Josiah, the king tore his clothes in grief then immediately made spiritual reforms in his own life and the whole country. With just one reading of God's word, he changed the way of the country (2 Kings 22:8-23:25).
Today, most of us have a Bible, but are we changed by the truths it contains? We are called to read, hear, and obey His word. That Word will make us like Josiah, which is to immediately take action to bring our lives into harmony according to God's will --MLW
