WIN THE GAME

Let us put off all the burdens and sins that so hinder us, and run diligently in the race that is required for us (Hebrews 12:1)

On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister broke the record for being the first person in history to be able to run 1600 meters in less than 4 minutes. However, two months later, John Landy broke the record by 1.4 seconds faster. On August 7, 1954, these two athletes competed in a historic competition. As they were about to finish the last lap, Landy was seen leading the way. The crowd predicted he would win the match. As he neared the finish line, he was haunted by the question, "Where's Bannister?" When he looked back, Bannister had shot past him. Some time later, Landy revealed to a Time magazine reporter, "If I hadn't looked back, I would have won that game!"

One of the most accurate descriptions of the Christian life in the Bible is that of an athlete competing in a competition. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 tells us that discipline is the key to victory. In Hebrews 12:1-2, we are encouraged to stay away from things that can hinder our spiritual growth and to direct our eyes to Christ. And in Philippians 3:12-13, the Apostle Paul said, "I pursue it...I forget what is behind me and direct myself to what is ahead of me."

God, give us perseverance in living life's competition. Help us not to sink into the mistakes of the past, but to stay disciplined and stay away from the wrong path. May we continue to direct our eyes to the eternal goal and keep looking at Jesus -- HGB
