Did I do something wrong. because I preached the gospel of God to you free? (2 Corinthians 11:7)
Several years ago a newsletter reported about a preacher who was selling blessings for installment payments. Sounds preposterous. It offers blessings for a period of 12 months for $84 USD. Anyone who wants to be prayed for by him can fill out a coupon and send $7 a month for a year. Saying that his prayers would bring financial blessings to the person being prayed for, the pastor promised that he would send a "certificate of blessings" after the first month's payment was received as well as an "anointed purse" after the second payment. Of course, there is no money back guarantee.
Can you imagine Jesus, Peter, or Paul promising to pray for people in exchange for money? Certainly not! Paul tried his best to live a blameless life. In 2 Corinthians 11:7 Paul tells believers that he "preached the gospel of God [to them] free." Even though what Paul meant in this verse was the preaching of God's Word, the principle of serving with pure motives applies to all forms of service.
Be wary of anyone asking for money in return for spiritual blessings. James 5:16 states, "The prayer of a righteous man, when he is prayed with confidence, has great power." I thought, a righteous person would not charge for his prayers! [RWD]
