OVERCOME PRESSURE

In every way we are oppressed, but not crushed; we are perplexed, but not discouraged (2 Corinthians 4:8)

If you've ever tried water-skiing, you know how the ocean feels like it's pressing down on you before it slides to the surface. The boat's engine roars, your muscles tense, and the ocean seems to hold you beneath the surface. But if you know how to harness the power of the boat's engine, you too will be lifted up and in a few seconds you will be sliding above the surface of the water which seemed to be trying to drown you.

Water-skiing has parallels to our Christian experience of entering the depths of the sea of temptation. We must learn to harness the strength of God. At first it takes a lot of struggle and effort as we hold fast to God's promises. Our own weakness alone seems almost unbearable. But like the sea water lifting those ski boots, the difficulties that confront challenge us to rely on God's supernatural power. About this the Apostle Paul wrote: "We have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that it may be shown that the power that abounds is from God, and not from us" (2 Corinthians 4:7).

Are we learning this spiritual truth? Have we seen the depths of the sea of temptation as an opportunity to realize the supernatural power that lifts us up and carries us along the surface of the waters that previously tried to drown us? [MRD II]
