WASTED TIME?

Then Jesus' heart was moved by compassion, so He touched their eyes (Matthew 20:34)

You've got activities planned for the entire day--doing the laundry, shopping, a pile of to-do lists--when your neighbor calls and invites you out for coffee. Then you think: he's not a believer in Christ, and you've been praying for the chance to talk to him. You know that he is in trouble. Are you leaving?

Or, a friend asks you to be a big brother to a teenager who really needs a father figure. It will take up valuable time from your day. Do you agree? Does that mean enough to you?

Jesus often changed His schedule to minister to the people He met along the way. In Matthew 20:29-34 we read that He stopped and healed two blind men who asked for help and ignored those who tried to stop him. On another occasion, Jesus reprimanded the disciples for keeping the children away from Him (Luke 18:15-17).

Writer Henri Nouwen reflects on such ministry. For the past ten years, her life has been devoted to running the house for the truly disabled, spending two hours each morning washing, shaving, dressing and feeding the most retarded.

Serving people who are unable to respond may seem inefficient to us. But when we look at the example of Jesus, we learn that love and service are never wasted time [DCE]
