Awake, you who sleep and arise from the dead and Christ will shine upon you (Ephesians 5:14)
Gary Dockery, like 20th century Rip Van Winkle, slept in a coma for seven and a half years. He is a policeman who was shot in the head in the line of duty. Unconscious and unable to communicate, dead by the world's standards.
Then a medical miracle happened. He's awake! He's sober! She immediately recognized her family and expressed affection for her two children. He talked for 18 hours, remembering the past and observing what happened during his long sleep. But after undergoing emergency surgery to drain fluid from his lungs, Dockery never reached that level of consciousness. A year later, he died.
Many people are alive physically, but are in a coma spiritually. They are oblivious to the existence of the divine realm, have no communication with God at all, and are dead according to the standards of the spiritual world. However, just as Jesus raised Lazarus from the grave, the Holy Spirit can give new spiritual life to those who have urgent needs: "Awake, you who sleep and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you" (Ephesians 5: 14).
How grateful you are, if you live in Christ, that you have been awakened from spiritual sleep! But if in the past you did not respond to God, now is the time to wake up! He will give you eternal life [VCG]
