THIS IS BETTER

Gaining wisdom is more valuable than gold, and understanding is more valuable than silver (Proverbs 16:16).

People all over the world are always looking for the better, whether it's buying fruit at the market or choosing a place to live. We test, contemplate, compare, and ultimately make choices based on what we believe is better. I can't imagine anyone saying, "I took this one, because I believe it's worse."

The book of Proverbs contains comparisons that direct us to the right path in life. Since the purpose of the book is to give its readers knowledge and wisdom based on the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:2,7), it is not surprising that the statement includes, "This thing is better than that."

In the book of Proverbs chapter 16, we read that it is better to acquire wisdom than gold or silver (verse 16); it is better to be humble among the poor than arrogant among the rich (v. 19); it is better to be patient than to preside over the city (v. 32). Some people have the ability to be both wise and rich. However, when faced with a choice between the two, Proverbs says that wisdom is the better choice.

As we read the book of Proverbs, let's look for signs that say, "This is better!" When God's word shapes our minds and guides our choices, we will find that His ways are always better --DCM

Not what we have, but what we use,
Not what we see, but what we determine
That can destroy or please
All human happiness. --Anon.

A LITTLE WISDOM IS BETTER THAN MANY TREASURES
