Once an artist was falsely accused and thrown into jail. Although he was allowed to bring his brushes and paints with him, he had no idea how to get hold of the canvas.
One day in despair, he then asked a warden for something he could use to paint. Indifferently, the warden brought a dirty old handkerchief and threw it at the artist saying, "Look, what can you do with that dirty cloth!"
The artist who is also a Christian then describes his understanding of the face of Jesus. After painting long enough and diligently, he thought he would first show his work to the warden who gave him a dirty cloth as a canvas. When the jailer saw the beautiful painting, his heart was moved, and tears filled his eyes. In later life the painting became famous.
If someone could change a dirty old sheet to glisten with beauty that would make an indifferent and indifferent jailer cry, just think what the Great Artist could do for our lives if we allowed Him to fulfill His will in us. .
In our sinful state, we are just old "dirty rags", devoid of spiritual beauty. However, the power of God's Holy Spirit can transform us into a masterpiece of divine grace! --HGB
