KEEP GOING FORWARD

It is not as if I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I am pursuing it...and aiming at what is before me (Philippians 3:12-13)

A talented Greek artist named Timanthes studied under a famous painter. Several years later, the young painter produced a very beautiful work. He admired the painting so much that from day to day he spent time looking at it without getting bored.

One morning he was shocked when he found out that his teacher had deliberately damaged the painting he admired so much. Angry and in tears, Timanthes ran to his teacher and questioned why he had destroyed his most prized possession.

The wise teacher replied, "I did it for your own good. The painting slows down your progress. The painting is of high quality, but it is still not perfect. Begin again and see if you can do better."

The student listened to his teacher's advice and finally he produced a large work entitled Sacrifice of Iphigenia (Iphigenia's Sacrifice), which is considered one of the highest quality works of classical painting.

God never wants us to be complacent with what we have accomplished. He wants us to keep advancing to ever higher heights of Christlike service and perfection.

The Apostle Paul understood this, because even though he was a very devout man and had done much, he recognized that he still needed to move forward in holiness (Philippians 3:12,14).

O children of God, do not be satisfied with the spiritual success you have achieved. With His help, move forward! -- HGB
