I always mean to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and are firm in the truth you have received (2 Peter 1:12)
How can it be that people who experience the same event retain completely different memories of that event? An article in the Associated Press summarizes the results of dozens of studies on human memory: Human memory cannot record indelible memories. Human memory is fragile, incomplete, malleable, and very easily influenced by other people's input.
Memories can change over time. In some cases, people will slightly change their version of an event through each retelling, much as a fisherman exaggerates the story of the escaped fish. However, an objective and factual record can correct distorted memories, which are acceptable to us.
Peter wrote two letters to give us an accurate and long-lasting record of God's truth. I always intend to remind you of all of these things, even though you already know and have been steadfast in the truth that you have received. ... I will try, so that ... you will always remember these things (2Pet 1: 12,15).
Our fragile memories need constant refreshing through the record of God's word, the Bible, which never changes. Through these reliable reminders, we can keep our minds from drifting silently toward a mere human perspective on life.
God uses the Bible to arouse our minds so that we don't forget His DCM truth
