DEEP WATER

Let not the waves sweep me away, nor the torrent swallow me up, nor the well close its mouth over me (Psalm 69:16)

The manufacturers of sport utility vehicles (SUV) love to show their products in situations that make us stunned. For example, on steep, high mountain cliffs, where no truck is likely to reach. Or in impassable swamps where you need a hovercraft [a vehicle that can run on land and water] to solve the problem. We're expected to think that SUVs are unbeatable.

Because of this I came across an accidental joke about a warranty disclaimer in a recent advertisement for a four-wheel-drive SUV. One photo shows the vehicle submerged in water up to its headlights, while trying to cross a river. The ad read: "Traveling in deep water may cause damage which voids warranty."

Deep water is not only a problem for cars, but also for us. As we traverse the streets of life, we are often held in by seas of sorrow or by the pounding waves of broken relationships. We need help.

The writer of the Psalms tells of the help that was needed. They say that God is “a place of refuge in times of trouble” (9:10), and that “in times of danger … He lifts me up on a rock” (27:5). There is no warranty disclaimer in this case. Passing through deep water will not affect our spiritual assurance. Allah will always be there to ensure His support.

Are you in deep water? Reach out and take God's merciful hand —Dave Branon
