SURPRISING ANSWER

If You rend the heavens and You come down (Isaiah 64:1)

"Tear the sky apart!" and, "get off!" said Prophet Isaiah begging. Make your name known by making the mountains shake and the nations tremble, he advises God (Isaiah 64:1-3).

Isaiah wanted God to act the same way He had done in the past. With the Bible's story of God's meeting with Moses on Mount Sinai in mind, Isaiah longed for God to repeat the deed.

However, God had already told Isaiah that He was going to do something new. "The prophecies of the past have now come true, new things I will tell you. Before these things appeared, I announced them to you" (42:9).

Those "new things" are Jesus! Allah has really come down. But not in Isaiah's lifetime. And not in the dramatic way that Isaiah desired. "He will not shout or raise his voice or raise his voice in the street" (42:2). He came into the world in the simple form of a baby.

Many of us can recall situations when God miraculously answered our needs at just the right time. Like Isaiah, we want God to do the same thing again. But perhaps He was planning on doing something else. As you celebrate God's humble descent into the world, realize that He came to change our hearts, and not just our circumstances.
