LOVE NEEDS TO BE EXPRESSED

Love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:18)

It seems that we do not understand the commandment to love. We may admit that our faith is not strong enough, but we seldom admit that we lack love. Maybe we feel loved just as much as anyone else, and maybe a little more.

After all, we are sensitive to the suffering of others. Our hearts are touched by the beaten wives and tortured children when we read about it in the newspapers. We squirm nervously in front of the TV at the sight of young children crying out with hunger or sitting in silent despair beyond crying.

But deep inside, we know that true caring is not just a feeling, but is manifested in action. Matters, like vapor or electricity, mean little unless something happens as a result. Love without works is useless, just as talent that is not shown through creative means is useless. Both must be expressed, otherwise they are no better than a myth.

Because we can't do everything, we often do nothing. If you want to be a loving person, don't start by taking care of the needs of the whole world. Start by paying attention to one person and build from there.

You can't do everything, but you can do something. What can you do, you need to do. Today, decide that in God's power and grace, you will do it -HWR
