TRUE SAVIOR

This saying is true and fully acceptable: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners," and among them I am the most sinful (1Timothy 1:15).

Some Christians feel very uneasy when they think about their sinful state. They long for holiness, but they see only evil in their hearts. Guilt grips the mind so much that they even doubt the salvation they have received from God.

Martin Luther once struggled with this problem. When he entered the monastery in Erfurt, Germany, he diligently prayed, fasted, and served so that
find relief from the burden of his sin. However, the burden remains.

The simple testimony given by John Staupitz, a dean of the theology faculty, illuminated his restless soul. John encouraged Luther to turn from his dark thoughts and surrender himself completely into the hands of the Redeemer. "Believe in the truth of His life and redemption from His death," he said.

Luther did so and found peace. However, soon he had doubts again. "Oh, my sin, my sin, my sin!" lamented. With the kindness of his noble heart, the dean told him that his great sorrow for his sin was his greatest hope. He said, "Know that Jesus Christ is the Savior even of great sinners who deserve severe punishment."

Let us thank Jesus every day because He was willing to die for us. He is a true Savior for true sinners -- DJD
