When You give it, they take it; when You open Your hand, they are filled with goodness (Psalm 104:28)
An article in National Geographic magazine was entitled: "The New Way of Fast Food." The article tells about a type of shorebird that has a unique way of eating, which is to prey on creatures that live in waters that are too deep for them. By spinning through the water at high speed, ie one complete revolution per second, this bird creates a whirlpool capable of "pumping" the shrimp from a depth of 1 meter.
According to a UCLA biologist, William M. Hamner, these birds are also fast eaters. Hamner's research team studied that "the bird is capable of detecting, striking, catching, carrying and swallowing its prey in less than half a second at 180 pecks per minute."
The writer of Psalm 104 may have never seen this bird, but he has seen the various geniuses of God's creative power in this world so that his heart is full of praise. He wrote, "The earth is full of your creation... small and large animals... They all wait for you, to be given food at the right time. When you give it, they gather it" (verses 24-28).
Have we ever thought about the systems that support our lives, namely the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the power we receive as something that comes from God's hand? Most of us often take it as something we should accept. Open Psalm 104, and see what a wonderful world God created -- DJD
