HUMBLE CANDIDATES

For the least of you all, he is the greatest (Luke 9:48)

"What do you think of these candidates?" That was the question a news magazine reporter asked a young woman at Dartmouth University after a debate between the presidential candidates. The young woman did not say a word about the positions of the candidates or their abilities during the debate. He simply said, "None of them has humility."

Benjamin Franklin, America's first statesman, listed the character traits he wanted to develop in his life. When he has mastered one trait, he moves on to the next trait. According to him, he can do well, until the time comes for him to develop humility. Whenever he thought he was making significant progress, he became complacent and became arrogant.

Humility is an elusive trait. Even Jesus' disciples struggled with this. When Jesus found them arguing over who was the greatest, He responded, "If anyone wants to be first, let him be last of all and servant of all" (Mark 9:35). Then He took a little child in her arms and indicated that we need to serve others humbly as if we were doing it for Christ.

If a news reporter came to our friends, neighbors, or fellow believers, and asked about us, would they call us humble? -- DCE
