LIFE UNCERTAINTY

You don't know what will happen tomorrow (James 4:14)

The only certainty in life is sheer uncertainty. As Scripture warns, we "do not know what will happen tomorrow" (James 4:14). Real estate developer Larry Silverstein can testify to the truth of that verse. Although he owns promising land in New York, according to his testimony, he is obsessed with making the World Trade Center Twin Towers a property he manages as well. His wish came true. Six weeks before the two stunning skyscrapers were destroyed by terrorists, he had secured a 99-year lease on the luxurious trading center for $3.2 billion.

Sadly, our attempts to fulfill our dreams can sometimes turn into nightmares. It reminds us not only of the uncertainties of life, but also of the need to unite our will with God's will. Experience teaches that if we allow pride to control our lives, our forced dream fulfillment will turn to dust and ashes.

Having desires is fine, but the book of James tells us how to approach those desires. Instead of assuming that our plans and dreams will come true, we should say, "If God wills, we will live and do this and that" (4:15).

When we surrender our plans to God's will, we can enjoy His peace in the midst of life's uncertainties -- Vernon Grounds
