Your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him (Matthew 6:8)
A man has turned a plot of land overgrown with bushes into a beautiful garden. Then he showed his work to a friend. Pointing to the flowerbed he said, "Look what I've done here." However, his friend corrected his words, "You mean, 'Look at what God and I have done here.'" The gardener replied, "I think you are right. But you should see the condition of this land when God took care of it alone."
We may smile in response to the gardener's answer, when in fact this answer reveals a wonderful spiritual truth, namely that we are God's co-workers. This applies to every area of our lives, including prayer. This answers a question that immediately arises when contemplating the words of Jesus in Matthew 6. Jesus said, we don't need to pray like people who don't know God, because our heavenly Father knows our needs before we ask for them (Matthew 6:7,8 ).
The question is, why do we pray? The answer is very simple and entertaining. By His grace, God has given us the privilege of being His co-workers in all areas of life, both physical and spiritual. We cooperate with God through prayer to defeat the power of evil and to fulfill His loving purpose for this world. What an honor it is to be God's co-workers! What an impetus for us to pray! --Herb Vander Lugt
