IN HIS POWER

I come with the might of the Lord God (Psalm 71:16)

In his famous painting A Helping Hand, Emile Renouf paints an old fisherman sitting in a boat with a little girl sitting next to him. Both of them gripped a very large paddle. The old fisherman looked at the little girl with a look full of affection and admiration.

The man seemed to have told the little girl that he could help row the boat. The girl was so eager to help that she felt as though she had helped a great deal. In fact, it was clear that it was the fisherman's muscular arms that moved the heavy oars.

I can see a parable in the painting. Christ has given us the privilege to participate in carrying out His work in this world. But don't forget, we can't carry out all our tasks if we only rely on our own abilities. It is only because God is at work in and with us that these tasks can be accomplished. While He asks us to grip the oar, we must always be aware of the source of our strength. He is the source of our strength! There will be no true spiritual progress if the power of the Holy Spirit does not support our lives and all the work we do.

Let us be aware of our weaknesses and let us echo the psalmist's cry, "I come with the might of the Lord God" (71:16). Then we will not be weak and fail --Henry Bosch

OUR BIGGEST WEAKNESS IS PROBABLY OUR
FAILURE TO RELY ON GOD'S STRENGTH
