Indeed, he whose heart is swollen is not upright, but the righteous will live by faith (Habakkuk 2: 4)
If you ask several people to draw a line of dents on a piece of paper, they are unlikely to make two exactly the same lines. From here we can draw a lesson: There are so many ways to live unrighteously, but there is only one way to live righteously.
God tells us that the righteous have only one choice, which is to "live by faith" (Habakkuk 2: 4). In the chapter before this revelation from God, the Prophet Habakkuk complained about the violence and injustice perpetrated by the people around him. It feels as if the wicked swallow up the righteous (Habakkuk 1:13).
God answered Habakkuk's complaint by saying that He expects His people to be "right" and live by faith. He does not want them to be like those who are “inflated” and “not upright in heart” (2:4). People who are arrogant and overconfident will find excuses for their mistakes and for their imperfections. He did not want to admit that he needed God. His life path is not straight.
Evil seems to prevail in our world. However, God encourages us to live by faith, and keeps in our hearts the assurance He gave Habakkuk, namely that the day of retribution for the wicked will come.
The only way to please God right now and prepare for the Day of Judgment is to live by faith --Albert Lee
