Peter and the other disciples went to the tomb. The two of them ran together (John 20:3,4)
When the dark day that marked the crucifixion of Jesus ended, it seemed that all the most beautiful things in life had ended as well. Over the course of a few short years, Christ has amazed many people and His followers through His wisdom of teaching and extraordinary miracles. But Jesus chose not to save Himself from the cross, and now His life is over.
It seemed that nothing more could be expected of him.
However, that hope reappeared early in the morning on the first day of His resurrection. A painting by Eugene Burnand depicts Peter and John running towards the tomb of Jesus. Shortly after daybreak, Mary Magdalene told them that she and her friends had found the tomb of Jesus empty. In Burnand's painting, the faces of Peter and John look both sad and relieved, both sad and surprised. In desperation and astonishment they ran towards the tomb of Jesus. The look in their eyes that seemed full of sincerity had attracted the attention of others to direct their eyes to the grave. What did they find? Jesus' tomb was empty--the Savior has risen!
Christ lives. Yet many of us live this life day by day as if He were still in the grave. How much better it is when we direct our gaze across the empty tomb to the Person who can fill our lives with the power of His resurrection! --Dave Egner
