HEART CARE

Guard your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23)

If you are over 40 years old, it means that your heart has beat more than 1.5 billion times. I realized that when my heart stopped beating, it was too late for me to change my lifestyle. So I try to control my weight, exercise, and pay attention not only to what I eat but also what is bothering me.

This last point relates to another important organ called the “heart”, which is our spiritual heart. Our hearts also beat a million times with thoughts, affection, and choices. In our hearts, we decide how we will speak, act, and respond to environmental conditions (Proverbs 4:23). Will we trust God and choose to be kind, patient, and loving? Or will we give in to pride, greed, and bitterness?

Today's Scripture reading emphasizes the importance of caring for our hearts. Are we staying spiritually healthy?

Weight: Do we need to reduce unnecessary burdens and thoughts?

Pulse: Are we maintaining a steady rhythm of thanksgiving and praise?

Blood pressure: Are our beliefs greater than our anxiety?

Diet: Are we enjoying the life-giving nourishment of God's word?

Have you checked your heart lately? --Mart De Haan
