He changed times and times, He removed kings and appointed kings (Daniel 2:21)
Throughout my life, I have watched bad people rise to political and military power, make grave mistakes, and then disappear behind the scenes. Even good leaders leave notes of faults and weaknesses.
The first chapter of Esther shows the arrogance of King Ahasuerus, the great ruler of the Persian empire. It held a massive party to show off its wealth and grandeur. After feasting for seven days, the king ordered his servants to bring Vashti, the queen, before the guests so that they could see her extraordinary beauty. But Queen Vashti refused to come, and her refusal embarrassed the great king of Persia (verses 12-18).
Ahasuerus was very angry and sought the advice of the wise men in his kingdom. They advised her to remove Vashti from her position as queen and “bestow her position as queen on someone better than her” (verse 19). God used these extraordinary events to place the Jewish girl in a strategic position to protect her people from destruction.
God's name is not mentioned throughout the book of Esther, but the message in chapter 1 is loud and clear: God can create good out of all things, even when people who are flawed and prone to error are involved. He is the real power behind every throne --Herb Vander Lugt
