Because our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but against ... the rulers of this dark world (Ephesians 6:12)
John Wesley believed that it was not his sermons but the prayers of God's people that brought thousands of people to Christ through his ministry. So he said, "God does nothing but answer the prayers of His people." Is this statement an exaggeration? Yes. However, the facts prove that our prayers are a powerful weapon in the war between God and Satan.
In today’s reading of Scripture, Daniel is so saddened by the revelation about the future of Israel, that all he can do is pray and fast. Three weeks later a heavenly messenger came, saying that God had sent him when Daniel prayed, but the rulers of the Persian kingdom opposed him (Daniel 10:13). This “ruler of the kingdom” was an evil spirit tasked with influencing the Persian rulers to oppose God’s plan. It had hindered the messenger of God, until Michael, the archangel, came to his aid.
The conflict between good and evil continues in the invisible spirit world. Paul warned that this battle involved Christians. He lists the spiritual armor and weapons we need to win this battle (Ephesians 6:13-17), and then he adds that we pray all the time (verse 18).
Our prayers can have a profound effect on the outcome of this spiritual warfare. Therefore, let us pray earnestly for good (1Timothy 1:18) --Herb Vander Lugt
