So it is with the rich; in the midst of all his efforts he will vanish (James 1:11)
After Bob Ritchie graduated from university, he spent the next two decades in the grip of a love for money and pursuing promotions. He moved his wife and family five times for the sake of his career, so he could make more money. Each time they moved, they left the friendly church community.
After some time, Bob and his family became less and less time spent at church. Because God's people became strangers, God also became a stranger to them. He became a truly lonely and isolated person. Feeling dissatisfied with his life, he finally said, “Enough!”
Now Bob testifies that God has taught the meaning of the word reduce. He stopped chasing money, spent less time at work, cut expenses, and learned to be content with what he had. His family has now returned to being loyal to God and active in the church.
In his brief and practical letter, James warns us not to become obsessed with amassing wealth (1:9-11; 5:1-6). Whether we are rich or poor, the desire for money can subtly take over our lives. Unknowingly, some believers have fallen into his clutches and vanished in the midst of their efforts (1:11).
Do you need to follow Bob's example? Maybe it's time to say, “Enough!”--Dave Egner
