You have heard from us how you should live to please God. You have done it, but you should do it more earnestly (1 Thessalonians 4:1)
A local newspaper reported that a $1.73 billion highway and public transit project in Denver, Colorado, was nearly completed on time and on budget. However, the news did not appear on the front page. In fact, the news is only tucked between the short summary column in small letters on page 3 in the local news section. Had the project been plagued by forgeries, delays, and over budget, then it would have made headlines.
I decided “Don’t Make News” was a good motto in life. If we cheat, cheat, and steal, that's new news. But when we are honest and follow moral rules, we can have an unrecognizable but effective spiritual influence on those around us.
When Paul commanded the Christians in Thessalonica to love one another, he said to them, “And consider it an honor to live quietly, to take care of your own affairs and to work with your hands … so that you may live as decent people in the eyes of outsiders and not dependent on them” (1 Thessalonians 4:11-12).
Since our goal is to please God in everything we do (verse 1), then whether people praise our actions or not, it makes no difference. We are called to be faithful, not to be famous. Evil deeds will sell newspapers. While honesty and integrity glorify God. Don't make news! -DCM
