Do not be carried away by the sins of others (1Timothy 5:22)
A Christian man in our neighborhood received a promotion that brought him a much larger income. Friends of the salesperson urged him to improve his lifestyle by buying a lot of things using a credit card. He does whatever other people do, like a family ski vacation, ride a yacht, buy new furniture, go on a luxury shopping trip.
Then sales receded, and his salary dropped. The pressure caused great tension in his marriage. His friends suggested that he do what they did: cheat his operating expense reports and sales reports. He followed their advice, but he was soon overcome with anxiety and guilt.
A wise Christian friend observed his tension and prayed for him. He then suggested that he had the courage to face reality. The suffering believer finally cried out to God in shame and regret. He confessed his sin, settled the matter with the company, and discussed it with his wife. Peace has finally returned to his life.
Paul’s teaching to the elders in today’s reading applies to all who believe in Jesus Christ. When so many cultures in the world are driven by pride and greed, the apostle's teaching not to be "carried away into the sins of others" (verse 22) is very appropriate.
When we are tempted to join others in wrongdoing, stay away! --DCE
