Teach us to number our days so that we may have a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12)
We call the final years of a person's life “old age”. But were those times really beautiful? For some people, old age is beautiful. But for many people, even for Christians, old age may be full of bitterness and despair.
To minimize this, we must set a goal to get the right focus from a young age. Robert Kastenbaum understands this. She wrote, “I feel increasingly responsible for my future and for everyone in my life. If given the chance to live to an old age, what kind of parent would I be? The answer to that question really depends on what kind of person I am at the moment.”
When I look at satisfied parents, I find that it is our focus, not our feelings, that determines what kind of person we become. I once visited a pious woman in her nineties who felt every joint and part of her body was worn out. “Old age is not for cowards!” he moaned honestly. As usual, his moaning became a way of praising God's goodness. Focus on giving thanks starting at a young age, splitting the clouds and allowing the sun's rays to penetrate them.
How do you feel, what is your focus today? Is it one of thanksgiving to Jesus and the gift of eternal life that He gives? If so, you'll grow more fun as you get older -JEY
